Materials & Finishes
Solid wood, honestly finished
We work with three European hardwoods — oak, walnut, and ash — chosen for their beauty, strength, and the way they reward a hand-applied finish. Every board is selected for grain and character; every finish is refinishable, so the piece can be maintained for a lifetime.
Our Woods
White Oak
Origin: European sustainably managed forests
Tight grain, warm honey tones that deepen with age. Our most-used timber — chosen for its workability, strength, and the way it rewards a hand-rubbed oil finish.
Used for: Tables, benches, shelving, bed frames
Walnut
Origin: European and Anatolian sources
A rich, dark hardwood with complex grain patterns. Naturally beautiful under oil; it develops a deeper, warmer patina over the years.
Used for: Side tables, sideboards, consoles
Ash
Origin: Northern European forests
Lighter and more elastic than oak. We use it for seating frames where bend and resilience matter alongside beauty. Open grain that takes oil well.
Used for: Chairs, stools, joinery frames
Finishes & Treatments
Applied by hand, refinishable for life
Every finish we use is penetrating, not filmed — it soaks into the wood, not over it. Scratches age in rather than showing white, and the surface can always be refreshed.
Natural Oil
A hand-rubbed linseed-based oil developed in the atelier. It penetrates the grain and leaves a matte, tactile surface. Food-safe, refinishable, and repairable.
Smoked
Fumed with natural ammonia to darken the tannins. The colour runs through the surface rather than sitting on top, so scratches age in instead of showing white.
Bleached
A lime-wash process that lightens the wood while keeping the grain visible. Sealed with hard-wax oil. Gives oak a calm, Scandinavian-leaning tone.
Dark Walnut
Walnut left to darken naturally under oil. The deepest tone in our range — chocolate to near-black, depending on the slab.
Natural Ash
Ash with a clear oil finish. Pale and clean, it shows the open grain honestly.
Oiled Ash
Ash with a warmer, amber-toned oil. It deepens the natural colour without darkening dramatically.
Other Materials
Where comfort and function ask for it
Natural Linen
A heavy-weight linen woven in Belgium. Breathable, durable, and beautifully textured. Used for seat cushions and backs in the Atölye collection.
Leather
Full-grain hide from a single Italian tannery, in cognac and dark tones. It ages with use, developing a patina that improves over the years.
Brass Hardware
Solid brass fittings, turned by hand. Used for shelf pins and optional drawer pulls. Left unlacquered so they patina naturally.
Sustainability
Longevity is the most sustainable choice
Our wood comes from sustainably managed European forests. We use solid timber — no plywood, no MDF, no composites — so every piece can be repaired, refinished, and passed on.
A piece you keep for forty years is better for the planet than four pieces that last ten.
